The Price of Success

Posted 12/18/2009 12:00 AM by Brian Harding

 Have you lost your edge?

The challenge to any company, team or group that is in a competitive environment is to keep the same focus, dedication and attention to the “little things” in periods of success. Isn’t it so true that you always learn more in defeat than in victory?

When we are doing well, we need to have the same dedication to doing things better; just because you are successful doesn’t mean you can’t do better or that you are necessarily doing things right. There is an old adage that after success comes a fall..... and it is not for nothing that this is said. How many times do we see that sports teams just cannot keep the same intensity when on a winning streak – it must come to an end.

How to remedy this? These 3 simple steps will help you to do so:

  1. Don’t get fat cat ...... pretend your “proverbials” are on the line – and see how that affects your decision making. Would you do things differently?
  2. Renew, renew, renew – your environment, your people, your processes ...... anything. Change for changes sake and avoid becoming stale.
  3. Get a new perspective; get in an outsider’s view .... don’t be afraid to look at an old business with new eyes; you’ll be surprised what you may find.

A nice problem to have  ..... of course, if you catch it in time.
