Skills, talent and some training are vitally important in the make-up of any successful individual, but at the end of the day – what determines real success in the workplace? Well, the working environment is no different to any other competitive environment. Companies do not exist in a vacuum and thus they need to be effective in whatever it is that they do. This translates directly down to their employees. Very often individuals trade on their qualifications, experience, etc. ..... but when all is said and done, what makes a difference is whether you can translate this into effective business outcomes in the workplace. If you can’t, all those things are really just ornaments on the mantle-piece.
Consider this – if a cricketer with all the skill, training and experience in the world goes out to bat and consistently makes 0, is he successful or not? The answer is clear. Employees and companies need to drive an outcomes based approach on effectiveness in the workplace.
Inputs (i.e. skills, training, experience etc.) mean nothing if not accompanied by successful outcomes. This is stating the obvious I hear you say and is common sense.
Well take a look around you .......... see what I mean?
